Summer kitchens have been used here in New England since the invention of the house, I suppose. It is a building or structure apart from the main house used for cooking and canning. This avoids unnecessary heating of the main living areas.
Here our farm had one long ago, and we are in the process of rebuilding one close to the house. Not for cooking and canning but to move our shop work area from it’s over cramped and crowded current space. It’s not large or glamorous by any stretch as a “studio, artist loft” or “gallery” would be. Oh, no I want personal, cozy, country and simple, just the way we are and live.

It has been a long time in the process since early fall of 2013, the dreaming, wants, desires, functional work spaces… talked about, drawn on scraps of papers, whispers just before sleep.. to an actual drawing, obtaining the proper permits and finding the contractors to help out.

Back in early May we started by clearing a few trees in the way, next to bring in some fill needed to level the ground, the foundation was laid out and the concrete poured. The lumber ordered and sawn by our local saw mill (no thank you big box lumber stores, we need local trees to put our community to work) and delivered early this week.
The carpenters are ready and the heat holds them up…
